Does Wordle Repeat Letters? Double Letter Rules Explained

Find out exactly how Wordle handles words with double or repeated letters. Learn the green and yellow color rules for repeats to improve your daily strategy.

The Frequency of Duplicate Characters

If you've ever guessed a word and wondered if a character can appear more than once, the short answer is yes, Wordle does repeat letters. In fact, approximately 32% of all official answers—roughly one in every three puzzles—contain at least one duplicate letter.

How Green and Yellow Hints Work with Doubles

The most confusing part about encountering words with double characters is understanding how the game board will react to your guesses. The core rule to remember: Wordle evaluates exact positions (Greens) first, and then doles out Yellows strictly left-to-right, never exceeding the total number of times that letter appears in the answer.

Scenario A: Why only one repeated letter gets credit

If you guess a letter twice but the answer contains it only once, Wordle will not give both copies credit. It marks green letters first, then assigns yellow using whatever matching letters are still left. Any extra copies become gray.

Example: You guess LEVEL, and the answer is HOTEL.

Target:
H
O
T
E
L
Guess:
L
E
V
E
L

Why? The last E and L are exact matches, so they turn green first. That already uses up the only E and L in HOTEL. As a result, the earlier E and L in LEVEL get no credit and stay gray.

Scenario B: Guessing one copy when the answer has two

If you guess a letter only once, but the answer contains it twice, Wordle will mark your letter normally if it belongs in the word. But one colored tile does not mean the answer contains that letter only once. It may still appear twice.

Example: You guess CLEAN, and the answer is CHILL.

Target:
C
H
I
L
L
Guess:
C
L
E
A
N

Why does this happen? The L in CLEAN is present in the answer, so Wordle marks it yellow. However, since you guessed only one L, the game gives feedback for only that one tile. It does not reveal whether the answer contains one L or two.

Most Common Repeated Patterns

Statistically, vowels are the most commonly repeated letters, and you will frequently see patterns like double 'O' (as in "BLOOM") or double 'E'. Double consonants like 'L' (as in "CHILL") or 'S' (as in "CLASS") are also highly frequent in the official dictionary.

Strategic Advice for Tricky Puzzles

Because these patterns are so common, you shouldn't be afraid to use guesses that test for them. However, do not use a word with a repeated letter for your very first guess. Your opening move should always aim to eliminate five unique, high-frequency characters across the board.

Once you hit guess three or four and you're struggling to find the remaining characters, actively ask yourself: could one of the letters I've already confirmed be used a second time?
